You can also check out the First Union African Baptist Church. It was built in 1883 by slaves and is the oldest building on the island. While you’re there, you might want to explore Old Town. A unique experience in Hilton Head is to visit the Gullah Museum, a historical museum founded in 2003 by a Hilton Head native. Visitors to the museum can learn about the island’s Gullah community, which was settled by Black people in the aftermath of the Civil War. The museum also hosts a Gullah Food Festival in October.
